Why Are We Experiencing A Nursing Shortage and How Can Remote Patient Monitoring Help?

Why are we experiencing a nursing shortage?

There are several drivers to why we are seeing a shortage of access to adequate skilled nursing. One reason is that now people have the ability to access care that they didn’t prior to the Affordable Care Act which is resulting in strain in healthcare communities that directly impacted nursing on the front lines. There are also many front line nurses who are retiring early, and moving to direct care based on the last year and a half because of the COVID pandemic.

How can RPM help with the shortage?

Maximizing nursing staff to be able to do more virtual business would be a key way to alleviate some of the nursing shortage issues. Remote patient monitoring offers high patient engagement and high patient patient adherence to self-care which produces better outcomes. RPM brings results from an investment standpoint such as, reduction in costs, improvement in care outcomes, and patient engagement.

Health Recovery Solutions New ED Triage and Diversion Model is a model that seeks to categorize and triage the patients. There are three different tiers to this model.

  • Tier 1: Very acutely ill patients who have to go to the emergency department but may still be able to be discharged home. These tier 1 patients are sent home with a complete kit.

  • Tier 2: May not need to go to the emergency department but are sent home with a complete kit.

  • Tier 4: Very low risk who may not need the complete kit, just a mobile version.

This model can help manage the COVID influx but also helps the hospitals with low staff.

HRS has another model called the Virtual Visit Strategy. They have found that not every one of these standard visits needs to be in-person. These visits can be switched to virtual visits to effectively monitor your patients, managing medications and following up. HRS has also come up with a Virtual Visit Calculator that shows which visits are prn. Working with their clients, they customize a model to blend in-person and virtual care.
