Essentially Open for Business

Making the Essential List

As of this date at least 316 million people in at least 42 states, three counties, 10 cities, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are being urged to stay home. In addition, these same entities have ordered the closure of nonessential businesses amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Did I mention that the government payroll protection program ran out of money.

How can a gym, fitness center, or health club possibly survive during these times with the determination of what’s essential versus nonessential technically left up to cities and states to decide. Yet to the Department of Homeland Security and all locales, there are some businesses that that all have deemed essential. These include:

  • Supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, discount stores, farmers' markets, food banks, healthcare operations, pharmacies, daycare centers, garbage collection, gas stations, auto-repair shops, banks, post offices, shipping businesses, veterinary clinics, pet stores, etc.
  • Businesses that provide necessities to shelters and economically disadvantaged people
  • Educational institutions, for the purposes of facilitating distance learning
  • Transportation, including airlines, taxis, ride share programs, and vehicle rentals
  • Businesses that allow essential businesses to operate

In the collective hope of flattening the curve of the spread of COVID-19, cities and states continue to shut down their nonessential businesses. Businesses that people rely on in everyday life will largely remain open. Unfortunately to the dismay of many that rely on their gyms, recreation centers, spas, and salons...these have been deemed nonessential. And what most have learned within these guidelines is that nonessential businesses don't provide groceries, health or financial support, utilities or support essential businesses.

It appears that there’s a disconnect between perceived value and true value when it comes to fitness services. It’s an unfortunate truth that gyms and personal training services are viewed as recreational, therefore nonessential. The culture's emphasis on “feeling the burn”, “no judgement” and “no pain, no gain” ultimately yields no value to healthcare. It’s a shocking fact that although the number of gyms continue to increase, so does the number of individuals dealing with preventable chronic diseases.

Taking notes from statistics obtained from deaths already registered globally, the two major preconditions leading to death were identified as type-2 diabetes and hypertension. This simply means that anyone who already suffers these conditions is at a higher risk of contracting the virus. Except for persons whose genes already carry traits of hypertension and diabetes, everyone else can watch and prevent these health conditions simply by establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Even if one carries these traits, consultations with a medical fitness professional to help one set healthy habits and principles that will keep them safe and healthy is highly recommended. Due to the abnormal stress on our healthcare system, many may find their doctor unavailable.

The thoughts of life and business returning to normal is naive. As an essential business, HEALTHEFIT extends the offer to explore the benefits of offering a medical fitness program that will equip gym owners with a renewed purpose and value added service as the nation prepares for a new norm.
